Jiang Cheng is a cultivator. In essence that means he Typical cultivation focuses on manipulating spiritual energy from the dantian (qi centres), using his Golden Core to store spiritual energy. This allows the practitioner to perform a number of feats such as summoning their blades, flying with swords, and slaying demonic creatures.He also carries Zidian, an heirloom from his mother. Zidian is a powerful magic tool, formed as a silver ring with a purple crystal that can turn into a whip, like purple lightning. The unique power of Zidian is that it allows the user to separate the spirit of an individual who's body has been possessed by a spirit, so it's useful if someone has been possessed. It only responds to its owner or a person the owner has given permission to use it.

Jiang Cheng is often referred to as a bad tempered and irritable man with very little control over his anger. He struggles with managing his temper and making sure that he has some kind of rational control over it - he is led by his emotions and is sometimes overwhelmed by them. This is one of his well known weaknesses and has been used in fights against him; preying on his anger and his emotion to leave him vulnerable and easier to defeat.
Despite this, Jiang Cheng is very passionate about the people he cares about. He is quick to show horror and anger at the way the people he cares about are treated by others and will come to their defence, even if he can find them (especially people like his brother) quite frustrated and difficult to deal with. This can be a very quick and emotional defence, as snappy as he is as a person, or as physical defence; he's quick to come to the side of people he loves and fight for them if necessary.
One of his major failings, however, is the fact that he has very low self-confidence and a very big inferiority complex. As his father favoured Wei Wuxian and his mother was very critical of his failures, he grew up lacking in belief in his own abilities. This has meant that he has tried very hard to prove himself over time, often pushing himself to his limits; his clan motto is to "attempt the impossible" and that is what he tries to do in order to prove his worth. He doesn't imagine that people like him or his personality particularly and so he justifies it by allowing himself to be that person, an angry, prideful leader that everyone pictures him as.
In spite of being filled with anger and regret after the loss of many members of his family Jiang Cheng has proven himself to be a good and devoted man, especially towards the family he has left. He is incredibly protective of his nephew and is prepared to do anything to keep him safe, even laying down his own life. He pays regular respects to the memories of his lost family members and shows kindness to those who seem to have earned it or deserved it in his eyes. Furthermore, he recognises the importance of remembrance to others, especially Wei Wuxian who he sees as someone who had betrayed him in the past.
Well aware of the importance of social rules, Jiang Cheng is a very well-trained and careful clan leader, respectful of the culture and law of his society and how he should act in it. He is a strict leader and cares deeply about his reputation and that of his clan, often to his own detriment. While he appears to be violent and cruel he is, at heart, a careful, kind man who is more wrapped up in his own grief and anger than anyone might imagine him to be.

Jiang Cheng grew up in Lotus Pier (the home of his clan) with his older siblings, Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian. He had a generally happy childhood, though he grew up with the knowledge that his father much preferred his adopted brother over him (to the point where he even had to give away his dogs as Wei Wuxian was afraid of them). This was a source of contention between Jiang Cheng's mother, Madam Yu, and his father, Jiang Fengmian, throughout the rest of his life.
In his teens he was sent to the Lan Clan to learn from the Grandmaster there. While there they encounter the Tortoise of Slaughter and begin to get tangled up in the web of the Wen Clan attempting to take over their society. It was here that he met Wen Qing, the woman that he held great affection for and seemed to intend to want to be with, either in marriage or courting or something of the sort. It's here that tension begins to develop between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, as Wei Wuxian begins to do more and more foolish things that get them both into trouble.
After returning him, he was forced to watch his family and home get murdered and destroyed. The Wen Clan wanted to take over Lotus Pier and when Madam Yu refused they invaded and destroyed everything. After escaping with his brother and sister, Jiang Cheng deliberately lets himself get captured to protect Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli from the Wen clan and, as a result, has his Golden Core melted. He was then taken care of/healed by Wen Qing and he managed to get his Core back after a period of intense depression. He didn't know that it was Wei Wuxian who gave him his core - all he knew was that his brother had found a way to do it. After this, Wei Wuxian goes missing and Jiang Cheng takes part in searching for him.
He goes on to take part in the Sunshot Campaign as leader of the Jiang Clan, getting vengeance for his family and helping to take down the Wen Clan. He ends up in the difficult position of a brand new clan leader at a very young age (barely 17/18) trying to balance politics and society all at once while also managing the fact that his brother is now a Demonic Cultivator, highly frowned upon in their society. Now he has tension with Wei Wuxian over his brother's choice to leave the Jiang Clan to take care of leftover, innocent Wen clan members. This leads to him having to literally fight and wound Wei Wuxian, even though he's well aware of the fact that these members of the clan are innocent - he struggles to differentiate between them and the ones that killed his family.
After a ceremony to honour the lost in the Sunshot campaign and the death of Wen Qing, Wen Ning and the other Wen clansmen, Jiang Cheng appeared to "murder" Wei Wuxian after the other lost control and their sister, Jiang Yanli, was killed. He went down in history as the man who finally killed Wei Wuxian despite not actually being able to do it in the end. He spent the next thirteen years hunting down Demonic Cultivators, pretending not to look for his brother and protecting and growing Lotus Pier. He continues to be the leader of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect. As both his sister and brother-in-law were dead, he co-parented his nephew, Jin Ling, with the leader of the Lin Sect, Jin Guangyao.
The rest of the time Jiang Cheng is at odds with the newly resurrected Wei Wuxian and is very tense with him and all the people defending/protecting him. It's not until late in the series that he finds out that he now has his brother's Golden Core - after they discover Jin Guangyao's crimes and face him together at the finale.
